*“Eclectica:” Please come enjoy the beautiful paintings and sculpture of Newtown resident Anne Marie Foran, on view in the library’s first floor meeting room until September 30.

*Main Floor Exhibit: The Scrapbag Quilters will be returning with another artistic exhibit of their work beginning September 17. Please stop by to see these one of a kind creations.

*First Floor Display Cases: Newtown resident and artist Paula Brinkman is offering “The Pool Books of Paula Brinkman” in the lower level display case. The sketchbooks contain watercolor images painted in Paula’s diary of her experiences in New York exercising in a pool every day.

*Also, a ballgown worn in 1882 by Mrs E.A. Hawley, aunt of Mary Hawley, is currently on view. Part of the library’s antique garment collection, the item was a gift from Mirable Crabtree, and considering its age, is in very good condition.

*Curator Mary Thomas would like to present a display in the fall featuring needlework such as embroidery and needlepoint from local residents. Items would be on temporary loan for display. If you would like to share your creation(s) please call Mary at 203-426-9696.

Programs For Adults

*Sierra Club meeting: The Sierra Club will host a meeting on Monday, September 20, at 7 pm, at the library.

Leslie Kane, director of Bent of the River Audubon Center in Southbury, will give a talk on “Connecting with Nature.”

*Mark Twain, A Book Discussion Series with Julie Stern: In this year that will see the publication of Twain’s autobiography, so scandalous that it was kept under wraps for 100 years after his death, let’s read and discuss classic works by Mark Twain and see why he may well be the greatest American novelist.

Join us on Wednesdays at 7:30 for the following titles: Tom Sawyer, September 22; The Prince and the Pauper, October 13; The  Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, October 22; and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, November 10.

*Inside the College Admissions Process: Thursday, September 23, at 7 pm.

Stephanie Wassink-Klein, the owner of Winning Applications, works with families navigating the intricacies of the college and/or graduate school admissions process. She will share insights from her many years of experience as a college admissions officer.

Ms Wassink-Klein will help you gain a keener understanding of the application essay, financial aid and mistakes to avoid. This program will focus on issues of special importance to seniors and juniors, although freshmen and sophomores will also benefit from the talk.

*Author Talk: Join us on Thursday, October 7, at 7 pm, when photojournalist and author Marc Regis will share his art and experiences from his last trip to Haiti just last month.

For the past five years, Mr Regis has accompanied a medical team that sets up makeshift clinics in some of the bateyes and provides medicine and medical care for the poor. He has written several books including Deadly Road to Democracy, Haiti Through My Eyes, When Freedom Comes and Two Good Feet. Copies of his books will be available for purchase after the talk.
