Sherman Resident - Former Newtowner - To Lead Berkshire Big Band In Outdoor Concert
Sherman Resident â Former Newtowner â To Lead Berkshire Big Band In Outdoor Concert
SHERMAN â An enduring passion for the trumpet and big band music since early childhood eventually led Sherman resident Chip Zellner to become the bandleader for the Berkshire Big Band.
The 17-piece ensemble will be performing on Sunday, September 19, from 3 to 4:30 pm in an outdoor concert on the Cobbler Shop Field, Route 37 in Sherman Center at the invitation of Sherman Historical Society. Rain date is September 26. Grounds will open at 2:30 pm.
âThere is nothing more powerful than the sonic power of a big band coming at you,â Mr Zellner said of his fascination with the music of the big band, swing and jazz eras. âBeing exposed to live music is an exciting and rewarding experienceâ.
Mr Zellner has been involved with the Berkshire Big Band as its director since 1987 when the band was formed out of Newtown Swing Band.
âThe band is an evolutionary unit which has progressed to its present configuration of 17 outstanding musicians, including our fabulous vocalist Jan Maki,â he said. As bandleader, Mr Zellner is constantly challenged to find original pieces and arrangements and to perform more difficult literature.
Tickets for Sunday are $20 ($15 for SHS members), and will be available at the event. Bring a chair, blanket and refreshments and wear your dancing shoes.
