Women’s Center Benefits Planned

DANBURY — Since 1975, The Women’s Center of Greater Danbury has provided uninterrupted service to the women, men, and children of the greater Danbury area including those in Newtown. As it celebrates its 35th anniversary, the center has a pair of fundraising events planned.

Atlantic Restaurant, at 176 Osborne Street in Danbury, will be selling complete grilled chicken dinners for only $10 to $12 each on Sunday, September 19, from 1 to 9 pm, to benefit the center’s 2010 Community United Against Domestic Violence Annual Walk on October 3.

Helena Abrantes and her family previously donated food from their restaurant at last year’s Walk, Executive Director Patricia Zachman said.

“So bring your family and friends,” she added. “There will be live music and raffles. You can order out or eat in.”

Anyone wishing to place an order in advance can email vowoye@snet.net or call 203-731-5200, extension 217.

Then on Friday, September 24, The Women’s Center will celebrate its 35th anniversary with an evening of comedy at The Palace Theater in Danbury. After a wine and light refreshments reception beginning at 7 pm, two nationally recognized comedians — Lizz Winstead and Erin Judge — will perform for friends and supporters of the center.

Lizz Winstead was the co-creator of The Daily Show. In addition to her commentary on numerous radio shows, she has appeared on both CNN and MSNBC.

Since 2007, Ms Winstead has produced and hosted a live show in New York City called Shoot The Messenger, a satirical wrap-up of the week’s news. Some longtime supporters of The Women’s Center may even remember her from its 20th anniversary celebration when she performed to a packed audience at the Amber Room.

Erin Judge is a comedian and writer whose stand-up pokes fun at gender, sexuality, pop culture, and “anything else the universe throws her way.” Ms Judge appeared on the third season of Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham television show and has performed at numerous clubs, colleges, and festivals around the country and the world.

Tickets are $35 per person in advance, $50 at the door, and seating is limited; visit www.wcogd.org or call 203-731-5200 to purchase tickets.

The Women’s Center of Greater Danbury provides free and confidential services to prevent or lessen the trauma associated with domestic violence, sexual assault, and other major life transitions to thousands of women, children and men annually. The programs of the Women’s Center are supported by state and local government, area United Way agencies. and the people and businesses in the communities it serves, including Newtown.
