To The Editor:

It’s hard to believe that it is municipal election time once again, two years fly by. I’m not a new face in our elections, but I know we have welcomed a lot of new residents to town over the last few years, so I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself. My name is Dan Cruson, and I am running for a spot on the Police Commission.

For those that are familiar with me, you will probably remember me as a member of the Board of Education from 2016-2023 and currently a member of the Board of Selectmen (and a candidate for First Selectman in the 2023 election) and wonder about the change in position that I am seeking this year. I enjoyed my time on the Board of Selectmen these past two years but due to life changes I couldn’t run for First Selectman this time around. So, I am stepping aside and letting the team of Bruce Walczak and Paul Lundquist run for the chance to lead the town into the future.

But what can I bring to the Police Commission? I was born and raised in Newtown and have a long history with Newtown and know its unique character very well. In addition to that I am a thoughtful and analytical person who spends time thinking through problems and trying to consider all angles and options before making decisions. This background and skills I believe will help me navigate the specific issues that a Police Commissioner faces on a regular basis.

I also have had the opportunity in my previous positions to cultivate useful skills and gather information. When I was on the Board of Education I was the liaison to the District Safety and Security Committee. The committee is focused on the safety and security of Newtown Public Schools, but it works with the Police Department, Emergency Services and many other stakeholders across the town. This has given me a chance to see first hand how all parts of the town work together to keep residents safe. I was also a member of, and ultimately chair of the Board of Education policy committee where I learned the process of developing, reviewing and approving policy. Finally, as a member of the Board of Selectmen I have become familiar with the needs and requirements of the Police Department through the budget process and requests of the department.

I believe I would bring a fresh viewpoint to the Police Commission that would be beneficial, and believe I have the skills to hit the ground running if elected to the position. I hope that everyone will get out to vote on November 4th and hope to meet many of you in the weeks leading up to the election as I knock on doors and attend events.

Dan Cruson
