Young Running For Board Of Finance
To The Editor:
My family and I moved to Newtown over 20 years ago and have never looked back. We love the town, the very friendly neighborhoods, and the beauty all around us. As newcomers, we found that there is much to enjoy and experience. We have four children who went through the school district here, each received the benefits of an excellent education.
Finding myself in Newtown led me to many opportunities. I was a nurse for 45 years and while here in Newtown, I opened a Medical/Legal consulting company which taught this nurse how to run a successful business, manage money, and collaborate with employees and clients.
Once I retired from nursing, the arts became my passion. I have been involved in theater for most of my life and continue to do so. I believe in the arts and their ability to change lives. I began a non-profit to provide theater classes to the men at Garner Correctional here in Newtown. The classes ran until the pandemic closed the volunteer programs. I began teaching at senior facilities in the area and still do today. Throughout, we have been able to keep the program active through generous donations.
I am enthusiastic about the study of history, and for a period of close to ten years I studied American History as if it was my job. Western Connecticut State University helped me forge ahead as I earned a Bachelors and Masters degree. The experience was not just about history; it was also the team work and sharing of information that coaxed me along. Being able to work in a group that was serious was motivating and rewarding. Today I am a playwright who spends her writing time delving in to the lives of historical figures and making them relevant again.
I have many reasons for running for office. As a teenager I spent days watching the Watergate fiasco as I babysat. I found the conversation and arguments fascinating. I was intrigued by the nature of the discussions that were expressed in precise terms with composure and patience. I wanted to sit at that table. I am so proud of men and women who have deliberately chosen to spend their time as volunteers working to keep communities healthy, productive, and growing. I knew I wanted to become involved. I believe my experience running a business for many years as well as a non-profit, is worthy. My many years working in service of people from all over the world, who required care, has opened my eyes to the needs of most everyone at some time. I have witnessed two pandemics, AIDS and Covid, which forced me to see the power in kindness. I believe this is what makes the world go round.
I hope I will earn your vote for the Board of Finance.
Thank you.
