St Rose Choir Plans Concerts
 And Musical Tour Of Italy
The St Rose of Lima Church Adult Choir is planning a series of five musical events in Newtown beginning October 5 and an 11-day musical pilgrimage to Italy in July 2005.
The series ââ a chamber music concert, a cabaret show, the traditional Christmas concert, the fourth annual St Rose Festival Chorus, and an afternoon of opera highlights ââ will be combined with fundraising events to help the choir defray the cost of the trip, approximately $40,000, which will take the choir to Rome, Assisi, Florence, Ravenna, and Venice.
âThe main purpose of this trip is to create an everlasting musical bond by performing not only in Italy, but [in] the home base or ârootsâ of our Catholic faith, Vatican City,â said Joseph J. Jacovino, Jr, organist and choir director at St Rose.
âAt the pinnacle of our trip, we will be performing a musical selection for our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II,â Mr Jacovino said.
The choir will be singing a Latin Mass at St Peterâs Basilica, performing sacred concerts at the church of St Ignatius in Rome and Santa Maria del Ricci Church in Florence, and singing for mass at the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi. The pastor of St Rose, Rev Robert Weiss, will accompany the choir on its musical pilgrimage. Donna Hendrickson, a member of the St Rose Choir, is the trip coordinator.
This yearâs concert series will begin with a chamber music concert on Sunday, October 4, at 4 pm. The concert will feature Mr Jacovino on the piano and guitarist Andy LaFreniere with members of the Western Connecticut State University music faculty performing âThe Picnic Suiteâ by Claude Bolling.
On Friday and Saturday, October 17â18, at 7:30 pm there will be a cabaret show, âItâs a Grand Night for Singing,â in the church hall.
The traditional Christmas concert featuring the music ministries of St Rose Church in Concert will be held on Sunday, December 7, at 4 pm.
The fourth annual St Rose Festival Chorus featuring the cantata âI Amâ by David Clydesdale for chorus and orchestra will be held on Palm Sunday, April 4, 2004, at 7 pm.
The series will conclude on Sunday, May 30, at 4 pm with an afternoon of famous opera highlights featuring the Litchfield Hills Opera Ensemble.
Fundraising events that are planned include a Yankee Candle sale on October 4, 5, 11, and 12; an art auction on Saturday, October 11, at 7:30 pm at Edmond Town Hall, and a Mardi Gras Bash and Dance on Saturday, February 21, at 7:30 pm in the St Rose Hall.
