A Great Opportunity

To the Editor:

Over the years, Newtown has been fortunate to have a number of dedicated women and men serve our beloved community in many ways. However, as a longtime educator in Newtown, it has saddened many of us to see our talented students leave Newtown after graduation.

In recent years, I have tried to encourage our young people to become actively involved in our town. Now we have a great opportunity to make this happen with the candidacy of Chris Lyddy.

Chris Lyddy is a graduate of Newtown High School, Salve Regina, and the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Social Policy and Practice. While at these schools he received his BSSW and MSW degrees. He has received accolades for his involvement in many social issues.

As a young man, he ran for Legislative Council and received the highest number of votes. Now he is the youngest elected official in Newtown. Chris is employed as a distinguished individual in social services. He has been given many awards for his outstanding performances from local and state officials and organizations.

Recently, I have spent the past few years as president of Association of Retired teachers in Connecticut (10,000 members and 14 local chapters). We worked hard to get legislation to protect teachers’ retirement benefits. We were successful. While working to this goal, I, as president, had the pleasure and opportunity to meet and work with many members of the General Assembly — representatives and senators. I introduced Chris Lyddy to a number of them. Without exception, he will be a welcomed addition to this General Assembly and they know that he has the ability to become one of their leaders.

Fellow citizens, praise the contributions of our former leaders. However, now is the time to encourage our young people to come forward and serve. A great opportunity has been given to us; I urge you to vote for Chris Lyddy for state representative.

Sincerely,

Earl J. Smith, Jr
