Hut Hut ... Youth Football Game Highlights

Grades 2-3

Southern Duchess 26 Newtown 79ers 0: Despite the loss, Newtown had solid efforts from middle blockers Gren Paynter, Michael Garner, Jacob Duffy and Jack Hannan which alloed for yardage gained by CJ Shembelan, Josh Dunn and quarterback Ryan Kost. Outside blockers Ryan Campbell and Owen Walsh enabled running back Tim Shaw to find some space for a pair of good runs. On the defensive side, Ethan Tousiant, Michael Garner and Riley McCafferty tackled well.

Grade 4

Newtown 33, Carmel 12: Bobby Haskins picked up a Carmel fumble and ran it 65 yards to score the first touchdown of the game and caught a pass by Justin Dunn for the extra point. Despite great tackles by Mitchell Savoca, Colin McCafferty, John Korth and Anthony Falbo, Carmel crossed the goal line

for a touchdown, but was stopped on the extra point. Outstanding blocking by Adam Bell, Henry Korth and Sam Pellicone allowed Mitchell Savoca to score a touchdown and Patrick Conte ran the ball in for the extra point. The tackling of Mitchell Long and Colin McCafferty helped Newtown shut down Carmel’s offense and get the ball back. Bobby Haskins pulled out of the fray to score the third touchdown and Thomas Cotton rushed 20 yards for another score. Patrick Conte threw a pass to Thomas Cotton that brought the ball one yard shy of the end zone, setting the stage for the game’s last touchdown by Scott Bauer. Tackles by Jack Wellman and Joseph Accousti helped keep Carmel from scoring late in the game.

Grade 5

Newtown Gold 28 Carmel 0: Quarterback Michael Doyle threw a strike to Ethan Carpenter who ran 22 yards and was tackled four yards short of the goal line on the first play of the game. Jared Pearson followed with a touchdown run behind the blocking of Jeremy Salaris, Matt Davis and Declan Sullivan.

Michael Doyle scored the extra point to give Newtown an early 7-0 lead. The defense of Ryan Shaw and Tim Mammen kept Carmel scoreless. Peyton Manning ran for the second TD and Scooter Sean Mccarthy made a block for halfback Nick Genovese to score the extra point. The great defensive play by Newtown continued with Gabe Barrett, Jeremy Salaris and Brian Kiley shutting down the Carmel offense. Stephen Faxlanger and Charlie Fletcher prevented Carmel from moving the ball on the outside and John Delrossi, Pearson and Sean Saunders. made key tackled behind the line of scrimmage. Doyle had a 41-yard carry for a TD and offensive linemen Michael Dutsar and Captain Crunch Salaris allowed Jared Pearson to score the extra point. Brian Kiley recovered a fumble to get the ball back in the hands of the Newtown offense and Doyle scored a TD to help Newtown to a 28-0 lead at the half. Shaw began the third quarter with a 40-yard kick return.

Linebackers Kyle Martinez, Saunders and Matt Carrino tallied five tackles in the next seven plays. Michael Dutsar and John Delrossi sacked the quarterback to prevent Carmel from gaining any momentum.

Gabe Barrett and Tim Mamman each took over quarterback duties and Carrino and James Accousti rushed the ball late in the game. Note: Last week, Charlie Fletcher blocked a punt and gave Newtown their first safety of the season.

Grade 7

Newtown Hawks 30, Carmel 0: The offense was led by the running of Justin Saint  (two touchdowns) and Cooper Gold and Matt Lindell (one TD each). Chase Wurtz and Sam Coffey also had a hand in the hard running attack. The offensive line, led by Jimmy Leidlein, Riley Cross, Pat Afryie, Tommy Gleason, Nick Norberg, Pat Carrello, Cam Partrick and Luca Weibel made room for the Newtown ball carriers. Julian Dunn kicked three extra points, and had three booming kickoffs. The defense was led by Connor Noonan, Mike Davis, Greg LaRussa, Matt White, Dom Scarangella, Nick Landau and Matt Hoyt which held Carmel to one first down. Lindell and Norberg also had interceptions.
