Newtown Soccer Updates

Girls Win Two

The Newtown High School girls’ soccer team improved to 2-0-1 with an impressive 5-1 win over Oxford at Treadwell Park on Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks previously beat Brookfield 3-1 in the opener on the NHS practice field on September 10 and tied Lauralton Hall on the road on Monday.

Jen Brewer, Kasey Schulz, and Kristen Tanner scored in the win over Brookfield. Monica Warek had two assists and Tanner also set up a goal. Schulz (assisted by Warek) netted the only goal in the tie with Hall. Against Oxford, NHS fell behind 1-0 but reeled off five unanswered goals to pull away. Schulz had two goals (Brittany Papaj and Kelly Sullivan had the assists), and Brewer, Tanner, and Ali Modzelewski all found the back of the net. Modzelewski’s goal, a long-range shot that grazed the cross bar, was assisted by Tanner. Brewer and Tanner both scored on headers set up by long-distance throw-ins by Warek.

The Hawks, after visiting Immaculate Thursday, entertain Pomperaug Saturday (7 pm at Blue and Gold Stadium).

Boys Ready For Soccerfest

The Nighthawks started the season 1-2. Newtown lost its opener 3-0 at Brookfield on September 9, rebounded with a 1-0 win over Kolbe Cathedral in the rain at Treadwell on September 12 and fell 3-1 at Masuk on Tuesday.

The NHS booters, following a home game with Immaculate on Thursday, will visit Pomperaug Saturday at 1 pm. They return home on Tuesday for a date with Joel Barlow at Blue and Gold Stadium, under the lights at 7 pm. This is the date for the fourth annual Soccerfest, which features a silent auction, raffles, events for children, halftime entertainment, and a chance to win prizes. Auction items include Knicks tickets, everything for the fireplace — including a half-cord of wood —sporting equipment, spa baskets, a catered cocktail party, and signed children’s books.
