Girls’ Volleyball Team Notches Win At New Fairfield

Newtown High School’s girls’ volleyball team picked up its first win of the season, defeating host New Fairfield 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-13) on September 15. It was Newtown’s first win following five losses to tough FCIAC squads to begin the year.

The Nighthawks registered 17 aces led by Leah Botta and Ava Lombardo, each with four, and Rylan Kennedy, Emma Kozek, and Cassie Pickering all with two. Allie Nowacki had 11 kills to go along with an ace and a block; Pickering recorded six kills and a block; and Elena Burdo added a trio of kills and two digs. Lombardo compiled 21 assists and a pair of digs. Addy Cordova had three digs, and Ava Ashla, Botta, and Taylor Leighton all had a pair of digs.

Newtown was coming off a 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-15) loss at Fairfield Ludlowe on September 12. Kennedy had a trio of aces; Pickering logged seven kills; Nowacki had four kills; Lombardo 15 assists; Botta three digs as well as an ace and a kill; Jordan Kemp had a kill and two digs; Burdo and Leighton also had two digs apiece.
