Garner Inmate Arrested On Assault Charge
State police said they went to Garner Correctional Institution at 50 Nunnawauk Road about 8:47 pm on September 14 in response to a report of an inmate having assaulted a correction officer there. After investigating, state police arrested inmate Shaka Sykes, 36, on a charge of assault on a correction officer. The officer allegedly was assaulted by Sykes while the officer was making rounds in the 245,000-square-foot high-security prison, state police said. It is unclear if the correction officer was injured in the incident. Sykes was scheduled for arraignment on the charge on the following day in Danbury Superior Court.
Sykes, who has been imprisoned for the past six years, is serving a 26-year sentence in Garner on a second-degree robbery conviction.
