Spare Jumpsuit Prompts Alert At Garner
The presence of a prisoner jumpsuit that was found lying in the lower parking lot at Garner Correctional Institution on the afternoon of September 22 prompted an alert for a potential inmate escape at the high-security state prison on Nunnawauk Road.
At about 4:15 pm, prison staffers apparently found the inmate jumpsuit in the parking lot, prompting them to alert state police, who in turn alerted town police of the problem and the potential of an inmate escape.
The prison went into âlockdownâ mode when the incident was reported, with all inmates being locked into their cells. A head count was taken, revealing that no prisoner was missing from the facility, said Ed Ramsey, a state Department of Correction (DOC) spokesman.
The emergency was then called off. The DOC is investigating how the jumpsuit found its way into the parking lot, Mr Ramsey said.
