To The Editor and members of the Newtown Community:

The level of hostility on local social media pages has risen to a degree that is harmful to the fabric of our community. The Newtown Democratic Town Committee feels that tensions need lowering and that it is imperative for us to address the current national discord that is seeping into our local discourse.

Two recent national tragedies — the assassination of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark and of Charlie Kirk — have shaken many, igniting strong emotions on all sides of the political spectrum. Regardless of where we stand politically, we must affirm one unshakable truth: No one should ever be harmed for their beliefs.

Violence in response to a person’s beliefs is not only morally reprehensible — it is antithetical to the principles upon which our country was founded. The First Amendment guarantees the right to freedom of thought and expression, and as a community, we must uphold these rights for everyone, even when we disagree. Asserting and upholding our First Amendment rights, with civility and mutual respect — results in a stronger community.

In six weeks, we will come together to vote in our municipal elections — elections that will shape the policies affecting our schools, our infrastructure, our budget, and our safety. These local issues, more than anything else, influence our daily lives and the future of our town.

Let us engage in dialogue, not division. Let us respect one another’s political opinions, and right to disagree. Let us remember that democracy is not just about political contests — it’s about how we treat one another, especially when we differ.

For the next six weeks — and beyond — let us recommit to being kinder, more united, more — Nicer in Newtown.

Alex Villamil

Chair, Newtown Democratic Town Committee
