To The Editor,

I am writing to express my strong support for First Selectman Jeffery Capeci’s exemplary leadership in advancing Newtown’s economic development while thoughtfully balancing housing pressures and preserving our cherished open spaces. His proactive and principled approach has strengthened our community’s economic vitality and quality of life.

Mr Capeci has championed sustainable economic growth by supporting initiatives that attract businesses to Newtown while preserving its small-town character. His administration has worked diligently to streamline permitting processes and foster a business-friendly environment. These efforts have encouraged local commerce without compromising our community’s unique identity.

On housing, Mr Capeci has adeptly navigated the complex challenge of addressing Fairfield Hills development. He has advocated for responsible development that balances the need for new housing with the preservation of open spaces, ensuring that projects align with Newtown’s long-term vision. The Newtown Bee reported on his oversight of the Fairfield Hills Master Plan discussions, emphasizing affordable and mixed-use housing options while protecting green spaces. His commitment to community input has ensured that development respects Newtown’s heritage.

Moreover, Mr Capeci’s early and resolute opposition to the state’s proposed HB 5002, which threatened local zoning control, demonstrated his dedication to local governance. Aligning with the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities, he argued persuasively against the bill’s overreach, as noted in the Newtown Bee article “Newtown Leaders Oppose State Zoning Bill” (March 14, 2023). His leadership helped protect Newtown’s ability to make decisions that reflect our community’s needs and values.

Mr Capeci’s forward-thinking leadership deserves our gratitude and continued support as he guides Newtown toward a prosperous and balanced future.

Vincent Cuocci
