Horse Guard Celebrates Anniversary Of Signing Of Charter

The Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard is celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the signing of its charter on October 4 on the New Haven Green, from 10 to 11 am.

Brigadier General Steven Scorzato, Assistant Adjutant General of the Connecticut Army National Guard, will review 2GHG mounted Troops, along with Troopers and mounts from the First Company Governor’s Horse Guard and the First and Second Company Governor’s Foot Guards. The Old Guard from New York City, the Centennial Legion from Atlanta, Georgia and the Second Continental Light Dragoons from Colchester will also attend.

The ceremony and review will take place in front of the World War I monument on the New Haven Green. This monument is dedicated to all of the soldiers from New Haven who fought and died during World War I. During World War I, 2GHG was re-designated as Company’s A and D, 101st Machine Gun Battalion, 26th Division. Company D suffered eleven casualties and their names are inscribed on the bronze plaque.

For 200 years, 2GHG has been serving the citizenry of Connecticut and is one of the oldest Cavalry Units in continuous service in the United States. Horse Guard Troopers participate in ceremonial events including parades, funeral honor squads, gubernatorial inaugurals, presidential inaugural parades and other events at the order of either the Governor or the Adjutant General. Members are dedicated to preserving the history of the cavalry in the State of Connecticut.

The Battalion Review is a chance to see Connecticut’s living history. Almost 200 years to the day of it’s formation, on the same green, 2GHG is proud to host this celebration of its past, present and future. Major Gordon J. Johnson and the 2GHG Officers and Troopers are honored to host this historic event.
