New State Area Codes Waiting In DPUC Wings

HARTFORD (AP) — Connecticut is running out of phone numbers in its two area codes and state regulators are preparing plans to launch two new ones.

The latest projections have the 860 and 203 area codes running out of numbers in the next two years. The state Department of Public Utility Control is dusting off long-standing plans to introduce the new 959 and 475 codes.

When the new codes are in place, phone service customers will have to dial all ten digits in all Connecticut numbers all the time.

The 959 code will be used in the current 860 area, and 475 will be put in place in the 203 area. Existing customers will keep their phone numbers, and the new codes will be assigned to new lines.

The state is planning a public education campaign that will begin at least six months before the new codes are put in place.
