NHS Field Hockey, Volleyball And Cross Country Recap

Field Hockey Hosts Breast Cancer Awareness Game

Linda Magliocco and Alyssa Carey scored goals in a 2-0 win at Bethel on Tuesday. The Nighthawks ran their record to 4-0-1 after having defeated Masuk 3-0 on September 18 (goals scored by Magliocco, Carey and Lisa Isabella).  The Nighthawks were scheduled to host Joel Barlow on Thursday (after The Bee Sports Section went to press), will visit Brookfield on Monday and return home October 2 for a game under the lights at 7 pm at Blue and Gold Stadium against New Fairfield for a “Breast Cancer Awareness Game” in participation with Play 4 The Cure. All proceeds will be donated for breast cancer research and the Hawks will play in pink shirts and use pink balls.

Volleyball Team Starts 5-0

The Nighthawks improved to 5-0 heading into Wednesday’s clash at Masuk. Newtown has defeated Lauralton Hall 3-0, Joel Barlow 3-2, Bunnell 3-0, Barlow 3-1 and Bunnell 3-0 again. In the latest win over Bunnell, this past Tuesday, Megan Casey compiled 15 kills and added nine serving aces and Jordyn Good had eight kills and nine digs in a 25-19, 25-15, 25-15 win. Newtown will host New Milford Friday at 5:30 pm and travel to New Fairfield on Monday.

Runners Sweep

The girls’ cross country team improved to 7-1 after beating three opponents at Joel Barlow’s course on Tuesday. The scores were as follows: Newtown 21, Barlow 37; Newtown 20, Brookfield 43; Newtown 19, Lauralton Hall 44.

Rose Wiley of Brookfield finished first in a time of 21:12. Newtown’s Anne Martino finished second overall (21:37), teammate Natalie Villa finished fifth (22:28), Mara Scallon was sixth (22:30), Erin Begg placed seventh (22:30), Katie Burns was 10th (23:52), Dani Villa was 11th (23:58), Lila Kohrman-Glaser placed 13th (24:07), Emily Teri was 17th (24:33) and Emily Weber placed 19th (24:44).
