Football Team Boots New Milford And Gets Set To Visit Windsor
Newtown High School’s football team went to New Milford and defeated the Green Wave 63-7 in the Boot Trophy game on September 19. The Nighthawks scored early and often, building a commanding 57-0 halftime lead and cruising in the second half.
Quarterback Marcus Gerace completed nine of 11 pass attempts for 196 yards and four touchdowns and Cole Stockwell carried the ball 13 times for 156 yards and a trio of TDs, one on a 64-yard rush into the end zone, to lead the offense. Seven Nighthawk players got into the end zone when all was said and done.
Stockwell opened the scoring with a three-yard scoring run and Gerace rushed in for a four-yard score set up by a Caden Cuomo interception. Gerace connected with Grady Marks and, following an offside penalty on New Milford during the extra point kick, Nick Pavia ran the ball in for a two-point conversion and a 22-0 NHS lead. Stockwell’s 64-yard run helped the Nighthawks go up 29-0.
Gerace completed TD passes to Justyn Gonzalez (42 yards), Emmett Regan (57 yards), and Luke Stewart (19 yards) before Stockwell capped the first-half onslaught with a 12-yard scoring run.
The Green Wave got on the board in the third quarter. Jack Colonel completed his only pass attempt, a 31-yard touchdown strike to Max Malitsky in the fourth quarter.
Travis Rekos had three catches for 47 yards, Stewart had a pair of receptions for 28 yards, and Marks two catches for 22. Luke Gagnon carried the ball seven times for 51 yards.
Henri Quirk and Cuomo each had five total tackles, and Gonzalez and Graham Spencer both had four tackles. Pavia and Miles Commodore both had quarterback sacks. Jake Roszman averaged 50.9 yards on his eight kickoffs and T.J. Garvin had a 37-yard kickoff.
Newtown evened its record at 1-1 and will be on the road again Friday, September 26, when the Hawks take on Windsor at 6:30 pm. NHS is away again on October 3 with a visit to Stratford at 6 pm. Following a bye week the Hawks finally return home Friday, October 17, when Bunnell of Stratford visits at 7 pm.
