Girls’ Swim And Dive Squad Defeats Bunnell

Newtown High School’s girls swimming and diving team dominated in its home meet with Bunnell of Stratford on September 19. The Nighthawks locked up the team victory by establishing an 80-26 lead through results of the 500 yard freestyle race and exhibitioned the final four races to cruise to an 80-66 win.

The 200 yard medley relay team of Zoe Petertonjes, Indigo Land, Maddie Marcisz, and Sierra Marx was first in a time of 2:03.53; the relay comprising Ella Murphy, Jolene Brackett, Ella Viau, and Reagan Garvin was second in 2:23.30.

Emma Sheehan was second in the 200 freestyle race, recording a time of 2:28.42. NHS went one-two-three in the 200 individual medley event as Petertonjes won in 2:21.55, Murphy was runner-up in 2:46.61, and Viau followed in 2:53.87.

The Nighthawks repeated that feat in the next event; Land won the 50 free in 27.27, Madison Weston was second in 29.75, and Garvin third in 30.74. Aliyah Reuther won the diving competition with a score of 171.95.

Petertonjes won the 100 butterfly in 1:01.50. Marx took first in the 100 free with a time of 57.99 and Murphy came in third in 1:05.87. The Hawks earned the top three placements in the 500 with Marcisz making her final touch in 5:50.73, Sheehan second in 6:38.33, and Briella Dunckle third in 7:45.54.

In the 200 free relay Land, Viau, Garvin, and Petertonjes had the event’s fastest time in 1:56.76 and Brackett, Giulia Rossi, Weston, and Sheehan followed in 2:10.03, just ahead of Bunnell’s contingent with a time of 2:10.17.

Marx led the way in the 100 backstroke clocking in at 1:07.68 and Viau was the next fastest NHS finisher and third overall in 1:21.39. Land and Brackett had the top two 100 breaststroke times with a 1:19.97 and 1:30.46.

In the 400 free relay Murphy, Lucia Suarez, Weston, and Marx had the fastest time at 4:41.85, followed by the team of Sheehan, Dunkle, Rossi, and Land in 4:53.84.

Newtown hosts Pomperaug of Southbury Friday, September 26 at 4 pm.
