Displeased With Recycling Services
Displeased With
Recycling Services
To the Editor:
I am writing to express my displeasure with the current recycling services. Our family has lived in a number of different areas across the United States, and I have never had so much difficulty recycling as I do here.
I find this particularly interesting since Newtown is so concerned with preserving its open spaces yet seems to have difficulty when it comes to recycling cardboard. Typically I have a large amount of cardboard to recycle on a weekly basis. Yet at least once a month I am left with a huge pile to again truck back from the curb because it did not fit the stringent measurement set forth by the company that picks up the recycling. I have called town hall numerous times because I am quite confused. It seems to me that as a taxpayer, I am paying for this service. Since I am the consumer, the town government (who in fact represents the people of Newtown) should do its best to make it easy or at least reasonable for the taxpayer.
In my phone conversations to town hall I have made it clear that I pay for my garbage to be hauled away each week. If I have a problem with my current refuse company I call them, we discuss the issue and if we can not reach an agreement I switch companies. Amazingly enough, Newtown is a free market economy. So it would stand to reason that the town government could talk to the refuse company, which I am paying on my behalf. Yet I am always met with the same response. To paraphrase, I am told that is just the way it is. Well I will certainly remember that response when the polls open in November.
