Newtown High Cross Country Teams Sweep
Newtown High Schoolâs girlsâ and boysâ cross country teams swept the competition in their meets at Monroeâs Wolfe Park this past Tuesday. Both squads raced past host Masuk, Stratford, and Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on the 5K course.
The NHS girls beat Masuk 15-47, topped Startford 15-48, and knocked off Kolbe Cathedral 15-50. Katie Burns led all runners with a first-place finish in 20:59. Newtown took the top five overall spots as Hannah Schwartz finished second in 21:35, Jenny vanVeen placed third in 21:56, Erin Begg took fourth in 22:06, and Brianne Moulder rounded out the top-five with a 22:26 finish.
Newtownâs Kristen DeGirolamo was seventh overall in a time of 24:17, and Emily Ashbolt came in tenth in 23:35.
Newtownâs runners claimed finishes 12-20 as follows: Hanni Brumaghim 24:17; Anna Guaragno 24:28; Talia Fappiano 24:30; Kelly Coughlin 25:02; Sarah Craig 25:09; Randi Jackson 25:14; Kiera Elkow 25:28; Amanda Cirella 25:30; Kathryn DâAllesandro 25:31.
Newtownâs boysâ squad beat Masuk 25-36, and knocked off Stratford and Kolbe each by 15-50 scores. Masuk had finishers in the top two spots, but Newtownâs depth carried the team to victory by claiming the third through 17th place spots.
Newtownâs Nate Steinebrey led the way, clipping teammate Mitchell Russo at the line as the Newtown duo came in with times of 19:16 and 19:17.Â
Following closely behind in the top seven were Christopher Gamble (19:31), Rob Russo (19:42), Tom Floros (19:43), Joey Whelan (20:18), and Troy Larsen (20:25). Tom Giarratano, Alec Lockhart, Yossi Kohrman-Glaser, Peter Kerns, Luke Piazza, Aidan Pelisson, Matt Rospenda, and Nick Swenson finished the string of 15 straight Newtown runners.
