Next Town Players Production Will Be Comic Murder Thriller âWhodunnitâ
On a dark and stormy night in the English countryside, a respectable family lawyer hosts a dinner party at his home for an eccentric group of aristocrats and other distinguished guests. Unfortunately, one of those guests is an accomplished blackmailer. He has highly embarrassing information about each and every guest that, if revealed, would ruin either their social lives or their careers â or both. The situation is ripe for murder. The question is, âWho done it?â
Whodunnit by Anthony Shaffer is a comedic take on the classic 1930s English murder thriller and will run October 8-24 at The Little Theatre in Newtown. Shaffer himself described the play as âa sort of game with the audience.â He also said it is âa comedy of manners, an evocation of Agatha Christie and her British society milieu. ⦠All the facts will be given, mistakes will be made, all kinds of false clues planted. But we will play it as fair as we can.â
New York magazine said Whodunnit is âa torrent of merrimentâ that is âheavy with excitement, crackles with repartee, rings the bell with epigrams, and detonates depth charges of laughter.â And director Gene Golaszewski said of the show: âI directed this play almost 15 years ago in Brookfield. I had so much fun with it that I couldnât resist the opportunity to do it again.â
