Five Nights Of Detours Set For Church Hill
Motorists should expect a series of nighttime traffic detours beginning Sunday, October 7, stemming from work to relocate public utility lines at the Housatonic Railroad bridge over Church Hill Road, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The construction work, to place existing overhead utility lines beneath Church Hill Road, is scheduled for five successive overnight work periods. Each work period will begin at 10 pm and conclude at 6 am the following morning. The work sessions are currently slated for October 7-8,8-9, 9-10, 10-11 and 11-12, weather permitting. The construction work is scheduled to conclude at 6 am Friday, October 12.
While the section of Church Hill Road near the railroad bridge is closed, motorists traveling both eastbound and westbound on Church Hill Road will be detoured through the Fairfield Hills bypass road, which also is known as Wasserman Way and as Mile Hill Road. Detour signs will be posted.
The utility work at the bridge is being done in preparation for the replacement of it The height of the span will be increased to eliminate accidents involving trucks striking the bridge. The contract for bridge replacement work is expected to be awarded this fall, with work expected to start in spring 2002.
