Volunteers Needed To Help Construct

Second Treadwell Park Playground

The Newtown Lions Club and the Treadwell Park Committee are walking on air these days as they have recently come up with enough money to order the second, and much larger playground, for Treadwell Park. This structure is suitable for use by children 6 through 12. A smaller structure is already functioning and is well used.

Now the problem is one of a labor force. The playground will be delivered sometime around October 15 and is scheduled to be constructed on two consecutive weekends, October 20-21 and October 27-28. On both weekends E.M. O’Brien, which markets landscape structures, will have three technicians on the site to direct construction. But there need to be many Newtowners involved as well.

On the first Saturday, October 20, Peter Wallace, E.M. O’Brien representative, has said that 20 volunteers are needed for the day. On the following Sunday and for the following weekend, 30 people are needed each day.

“Now between the Lions Club and the Treadwell Park Committee, many of those 30 slots will be taken but there are many more spaces that need to be filled. Since the project is for the whole town, we hope that the community will rally around and we will be overflowing with volunteers,” said Gordon Williams, co-chair of the project.

Tammy Marks, the other co-chair, added, “In addition to the people needed to help construct, we need people to provide coffee, snacks, and lunch as well as babysitting services. If you can provide any of these helps or will organize a group to do so, we would like to hear from you.”

To volunteer in any capacity call Ms Marks at 426-5333 or Mr Williams at 426-6443.

Although the structure itself has been ordered, there is not enough money for the plaque honoring the donators, the special ground cover needed under the playground, and any lights or security devices. That is why the Lions Club and the Treadwell Park Committee are still looking for an additional $7,000. The Newtown Lions Club and the Treadwell Park Committee hope that the community will come forward and help finish the project in its construction and financing.
