Breast Cancer Walk Sunday

Judy Volpe, owner of Avance Esthetiques Day Spa in Newtown, is urging everyone to join her on Sunday, October 14, in the annual “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport.

This will be the eighth year that Ms Volpe has been coordinator for the Newtown area in this campaign to raise awareness as well as money for breast cancer research. Last year her team raised more than $13,000. Call 270-8911 to become a member or sponsor of the team.

The walk is an easy five-mile stroll along the beach and through the park. Participants can walk the entire route or any portion of it. A complimentary tailgate picnic is provided afterwards.

With more than 400 team captains participating, the American Cancer Society believes it will meet its goal of 6,000 participants in this year’s event. Walkers are expected to raise $500,000 in pledges. Funds raised will be used to support the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research, education, and support programs for breast cancer patients and their families in Connecticut.

Breast cancer, the most common form of cancer among American women, will strike more than 192,200 women this year including 2,500 in Connecticut. Five hundred Connecticut women will die of it this year.
