Text Size

The Knights of Columbus held its 5th Annual 5K Run 4 Hunger and Health to benefit FAITH Food Pantry and Newtown Youth and Family Services at Fairfield Hills on a rainy September 30 morning. The Knights filled their van with canned goods, and raised $17,000 at the event.

Milford’s Tyler Lomnitzer, 30, was first overall in a time of 19:28. Danbury’s Marcos Krause, 35, was runner-up in 20:17. The top Newtown finisher was third-place runner Dylan Champagne, 24, who came across the finish line in 22:03. The top female was fourth-place competitor Caitlin Ormond, 39, who completed her run in 22:13. Monroe’s Claudio Goncalves, 41, was fifth in 22:24, Sandy Hook’s Rohan Carey, 17, came in sixth with a time of 22:59. Newtown’s Gary DeBrito, 34, was seventh in 23:31. New Fairfield’s Logan Schramm, 13, came in eighth in 23:45. Danbury’s Brian Aleshire, 42, placed ninth with a time of 24:06. Easton’s Connor Lee, 14, was tenth, clocking in at 24:14, one second ahead of the second overall female, New Fairfield’s Laura Schramm, 43.

Newtown/Sandy Hook runners in the top 25: 13. Greg Branecky, 61, in 24:37; 16. Daniel Murtha, 35, in 24:54; 19. Madeline Britton, 14, in 25:13; 20. Frances Ashbolt, 62, in 25:34; 21. Nancy Ruhs, 51, in 25:39; 22. Mark Ashbolt, 62, in 25:43; 24. Rodney Smith, 49, in 26:17; and 25. Liam Kirkman, 14, in 26:30.

Lomnitzer has been running in whatever Mother Nature throws his way — including a lot of rain — since April as he prepares for the New York City Marathon this fall.

“I don’t usually run in the rain but it’s a nice challenge. It’s refreshing now that I’m done,” Ormond said.

“The weather was fun. The course was great,” said Lomnitzer, who noted that a steep incline sneaked up on the runners along the scenic course.
