A Celebrated Pianist Will Perform In Danbury
DANBURY â Pianist Frederic Chiu will perform on Sunday, October 28, in the second concert of Danbury Concert Associationâs 2001-02 season. The concert will take place at 3 pm in Ives Concert Hall, at 181 White Street, on the midtown campus of Western Connecticut State University.
Mr Chiu is an American-born and trained musician who now makes his home in Paris. He specializes in the early romantic piano repertory and the program for his first Danbury appearance will include virtuosic works of Liszt and Chopin.
Mr Chiuâs inventive interpretations and love of the seldom-played repertoire have earned him comparisons to Glenn Gould. He is âmore than a mere concert pianistâ wrote The Evening Standard of London, and Montrealâs La Press called him âa pianistic genius.â In the 1993 Van Cliburn Competition, after sidestepping the standard fare of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven for a more provocative program, Mr Chiu received international attention. The New York Times referred to him as a âmaverick American musician.â
Frederic Chiu is heard often on radio and television broadcasts in North America, Europe and Africa, and he has made a number of recordings, including etudes and rondos of Chopin. He graduated from Indiana University and The Juilliard School, and received an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1996.
Adult admission to all of the Associationâs concerts is $32 per season (one ticket gains entry into all of the concerts for the season). Through a grant from Danbury Cultural Commission, students age 18 and under and those attending Western Connecticut State University are admitted free of charge. (Guest tickets for those accompanying subscribers or students are $12, available at the door.)
