Joey Devellis scored a pair of touchdowns and Tucker Kass passed to Cody Shpunt for another as the Junior Midgets blanked the Danbury Vikings, 21-0, to push their record to 4-2 on the season. The win came a week after the ‘Hawks fell to the Danbury Trojans in Danbury.

Devellis – the quarterback – scored on a 40-yard naked bootleg and then on a 20-yard sweep behind the lead blocking of Joe Bowen and Steve Orrico. And Kass tossed a perfect pass to Shpunt on a halfback option.

Defensively, Joe Collins came up with a huge quarterback sack. So did Ted Gissen and Cody Shpunt, in tandem. Shpunt, Devellis, Orrico and Brian Stickles all registered behind-the-line tackles while Jake Putnicki and Kass also recovered fumbles.

Newtown started the game with Brian Poeltl running through solid holes for a total of 14 yards. Stickles, Nick Maurer, Orrico and Bowen did good work on the line to spring him free. Collins also powered the ball upfield behind the blocking of Tim Shepard, Jon Monaco and Tom Jackman.

Kass carried the ball well and helped pull off a perfect fake which sprung Devellis for his 40-yard bootleg touchdown to give Newtown a 6-0 lead.

In the first defensive series of the game, Collins, Kass and Ryan Tanner had strong tackles to prevent a Danbury advance. Poeltl made a big tackle on a sweep attempt to ultimately deny the first down. On offense, Steve Vichiola ran well, but Newtown was forced to give up the ball. The defense of Orrico, Kass, Poeltl and Tanner stopped Danbury cold and Putnicki recovered the first Viking fumble of the day.

Kass wasted no time as he scrambled his way downfield for a 20-yard gain behind the lead blocking of Orrico and Bowen. Matt Kuruc and Alex Middleleer played well up front, as well, and set up Devellis’ 20-yard sweep for a touchdown. Kass hit Shpunt in the end zone for the extra point and Newtown led 13-0.

Shpunt, Devellis and Collins were vicious on defense and stopped Danbury. Although Newtown failed to move the ball on its next series, the defensive work of Gissen and Shpunt stopped Danbury once again.

Kass, Devellis, and Poeltl took turns carrying the ball on the next series but it was the pass from Kass to Shpunt that went for seven yards and the third Newtown touchdown of the day. Tommy Gaboriault added the extra point kick to give Newtown a 21-0 lead at the half.

Highlights of the second half include Orrico and Stickles combining for a huge tackle and loss of yardage while Kass recovered another fumble.. The final excitement of the day came when Devellis picked off a desperate Vikings pass attempt and ran it back 30 yards before being brought down.

Newtown will visit New Fairfield on Sunday, October 14, for a 12 noon contest.

Jamie Vavrek and Mark Scheuneman scored touchdowns to lead the Junior Pee Wees to a 14-0 win over the Danbury Vikings.

The rainy weather was better suited to ducks and geese at kick-off, but it did not bother the Nighthawk squad. The Newtown offense decided to set the tone for the game, and drove down the field in seven plays to score the first touchdown of the day.  The drive was fueled by big runs by Jake Devellis and Scheunemann, and capped by a one-yard QB sneak by Vavrek. The ‘Hawks were not able to convert the PAT due to a high snap from center. Offensive line play by Paul Murphy, Jake Woolf, Anthony Corletto, and Timo Roehrs was another factor in the drive.

The Vikings took ball over after the Newtown score, but a dominating defense held the Vikings in check. Kyle McNamara, Cody Marus, Mike Poeltl, Mike Hadgraft, Ben Collins, and Woolf anchored the defense of Newtown on the front line. The Nighthawk linemen were in the Viking backfield almost as much as the Viking running backs.

As Newtown took possession of the ball on offense for the second time, the team picked up right where they left off. Brian Reszoly picked up crucial yardage on a counter for a first down, and then Scheunemann scored on a reverse that took the Vikings by surprise. Dan Curtis and Vavrek, alternating at the quarterback position, led the offense. The PAT attempt was wide to the right, and Newtown had a 12-0 lead.

The Danbury Vikings took control of the ball, but again were unable to move the football.  The Nighthawk defense was able to hold the Vikings all day.

The Nighthawks got the ball one more time in the first half. After a big run by David Hutchison for a first down, the Viking defense was able to stop the Newtown offense. Then the Vikings ran into Charlie Lobosco after he punted the ball on fourth down. This gave the Nighthawks an automatic first down. The offense got to the Danbury eight-yard line after a pass from Vavrek to Chris Dennis. The time ran out in the half before Newtown could score.

The Nighthawks continued to play tough defense in the second half and the offense was able to move the ball down the field, but was not able to score due to penalties. Matt Mascolo made an interception to stop one Viking drive, and a series of gang tackles in the Viking backfield forced the Vikings back to their own end zone. On a punt attempt in the fourth quarter, the Viking punter touched his knee to the ground in his end zone for a safety. This gave Newtown two more points and a 14-0 lead.

The Vikings then kicked the ball to the Nighthawks, who were able to keep possession of the ball until the game ended.

The Junior Pee Wees will visit the New Fairfield Falcons on Saturday, October 13, at 12 noon.

The Pee Wees enjoyed a very similar fate to the Junior Midgets last weekend as they, too, shut out the Danbury Vikings, 21-0.

Lucas Vendel scored a pair of touchdowns and Thomas Hutchison scored one to lead the Pee Wees to their fourth win of the season.

The Pee Wees started the game on defense and the work of Kris Kling, Erik Dreher, and Brendan Martin helped slow Danbury down. Justin McGrath and Hutchison also made plays, but the Vikings still managed a couple of first downs and brought the ball to the Newtown 21.

But the Pee Wees dug in. Ryan Manning made a stop for no gain. A penalty brought the Vikings back and then a tackle by Brett Mauro brought them even further back. A backfield tackle by Tyler Tarantino and Josh Friedman set up a fourth-and-24 and Jeff Davis made a solid play on a long pass attempt to stop the drive.

Hutchison and Tarantino carried the ball for a couple of first downs as Mario Roehrs, Travis Speer, Manning, Tim Wheeler and Greg Rodden played well up front. Zach Conger tookt he ball and brought it down to the Danbury 10, but the Vikings held firm and forced the Pee Wees to lose the ball on downs.

Dan DeLaVega, Mauro and Jamie Post led the defense on the next series, but Danbury continued to move the ball. Dreher made a big stop for a loss of yardage while Wheeler, Dave DeLaVega and McGrath combined to force a Danbury punt. Although Newtown fumbled – and lost – the punt, Danbury soon coughed the ball up as well. Manning recovered for Newtown.

The Pee Wees wasted little time capitalizing. Vendel followed the front line of Chris Salvatore, Roehrs, Mauro, Connor Martin, Wheeler and Rodden into the end zone for the first touchdown of the day. Hutchison added the extra point to put Newtown ahead, 7-0.

The Pee Wees tried an onside kick and – thanks to the slippery conditions – it worked. Martin recovered the kick and then the front line work of CJ Portolese helpd open holes for Tarantino, Conger and Hutchison as Newtown brought the ball downfield. Hutchison got the call to bring the ball into the end zone. Tarantino added the extra point as Newtown went ahead, 14-0.

On the opening drive of the second half, McGrath, Hutchison, and Tarantino picked up yardage behind key blocks from Speer, Rodden, Wheeler and Jacob Burg. But a fumble on the Danbury 20 stopped the drive.

Danbury and Newtown traded the ball back and forth. Speer, Tarantino, Peter Kraus, Dreher and Vendel all came up with big defensive plays. Vendel knocked the ball loose on one play and Tarantino recovered the fumble.

Later, Newtown was set up on the Danbury 20 following a Viking punt. Conger picked up some yardage behind the blocking of Blake Bell and Wheeler. Then Dreher picked up the first down behind Bell and Jamie Goodwick. Vendel followed a Goodwick block to the Danbury 1 and Vendel took it in from there for the touchdown. Dreher added the extra point and Newtown had its 21-0 win.

The Pee Wees will travel to New Fairfield on Saturday, October 13, for a 10 am game.
