Matt Deluca’s 21-yard pass to Simon Censabella in the second quarter made all the different as the Newtown High School junior varsity football team defeated New Milford, 8-0.

The winning drive for the jayvees started in Newtown’s own territory, but a personal foul call against the Green Wave soon moved the ball to the New Milford 45. Deluca soon hit Tim Byrne with a 19-yard pass and then Deluca tossed the 21-yard scoring strike to Censabella. Ben Bagaglio ran three yards for the conversion.

From then on, it was a game of field position and punts. Newtown came close to putting the ball in the end zone again after Deluca hit Byrne with a 26-yard pass to the New Milford 15 and hit Whipkey with a swing pass to the New Milford five. But that’s where the drive stalled.

In the fourth quarter, New Milford began a drive near midfield but Tim Barrett came up with a big sack that set the Green Wave back 15 yards. In the waning moments of the quarter, Matt Simpson had a nifty 10-yard run and Kyle Hastedt displayed a strong leg with a 45-yard punt that pinned New Milford deep in its own territory.

The frosh, meanwhile, fell to New Milford, 14-0. It was a defensive battle, with Bobby and Derek_Pattison both recovering fumbles. Matt Selezan also sparked the defense with solid play. On offense, the highlight was a 40-yard pass from quarterback John Collins to John_Morgan.
