Scholarships Info Available

In Career Center

Information and applications for the following scholarships have arrived in the Career Center at Newtown High School. Please note that these scholarships are not just for seniors; many are for underclassmen as well. For a complete list of scholarships available, check out the scholarship file in the Career Center. Please call Mrs McEvoy at 426-1915 with any questions.

Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarships , 2001 – for high school juniors with a minimum GPA of 2.75 who excel in three out of four areas: special talents, leadership, obstacles overcome, and community service. Applications are available in the Career Center or can be downloaded from www.aasa.org/discover.htm and must be received at AASA’s office no later than 5 pm on January 11, 2002.

National Peace Essay Contest – Sponsored by the United States Institute of Peace for students in grades 9-12. First place winners will receive scholarships of $1,000 and will compete for a national award of $10,000. The essay contest topic is “Debating the US Military’s Role in International Peacekeeping.” Complete instructions can be found in the essay contest Guidebook, which can be downloaded from the website www.usip.org/ed.html. Essays must be postmarked no later than January 23, 2002.

Ted Martocchio Scholarship (Building and Trades Union) – For high school seniors who have been accepted to one of the Connecticut State Universities. The award is $1,000. To be eligible, students must have a minimum 2.75 GPA, leadership or examples of volunteer work, be a resident of Connecticut, and be a child of a building and trades union member. No specific major is required. Financial need must be demonstrated. The deadline for applications is April 30, 2002 at 4 pm. Recipient will be named by early May.

Pratt and Whitney Scholarship – This $1,000 scholarship is for a graduating senior who has been accepted to Southern Connecticut State University. The requirements are a 3.0 GPA, demonstrated interest and /or examples of excellence in science or technology. Financial need must be demonstrated. The deadline for this application is April 30, 2002 at 4 pm. Recipient will be named by May 18, 2002.

T. Clark Hull Public Service Scholarship – A $500 award will be presented to a graduating senior who has been accepted to Western Connecticut State University. The requirements are a GPA of 3.0, demonstrated leadership and commitment to service to their high school or community, a resident of Connecticut, and demonstrate financial need. The deadline for this application is April 30, 2002 at 4 pm. The recipient will be named by May 18, 2002.

Connecticut Burglar and Fire Alarm Association, Inc. – This award will be granted to two qualified graduating high school seniors who are children of full-time employees of the Connecticut Police and Fire Communities. First prize will be $1,000 and the second will be $500. Application and essay is due no later than March 20, 2002. The recipient of the Police Scholarship will be expected to attend the Thursday April 11, 2002, Connecticut Police Chiefs EXPO in Southington to receive this award.
