Blacksmith Program At

Matthew Curtiss House

Newtown Historical Society’s next living history demonstration at Matthew Curtiss House will be on Sunday, October 12, from 1 to 4 pm. The program will feature Joseph Magnarella working over an open flame to show forge techniques used from 1740 to 1840.

Using examples of original  ironwork, Mr Magnarella will provide insight into the importance of the blacksmith in the community by discussing the variety of work that was done.

Mr Magnarella became interested in blacksmithing after he built a timber frame blacksmith shop at the Dutchess County Fairground in Rhinebeck, N.Y., using antique woodworking tools he had been collecting since 1965.

Costumed guides will be available for tours of the Matthew Curtiss House. The open house and living history demonstration are free. The museum, which also serves as headquarters for the historical society, is at 44 Main Street (Route 25).
