Workshop Opened A New Season For Gardeners
The Garden Club of Newtown began its 2003-04 year at C.H. Booth Library on October 1. Members met for a potluck lunch followed by a workshop during which members and guests made fall arrangements.
The designs were made utilizing fresh and dried items from membersâ own gardens, as well as some purchased fresh flowers.
After the meeting members delivered the arrangements to locations around Newtown, sharing their creativity with Edmond Town Hall, the Parks and Recreation Department, Matthew Curtiss House, The Newtown Bee, Newtown Savings Bank, and Ashlar of Newtown.
Newtown High School, Newtown Middle School, Reed Intermediate School, Sandy Hook School, Head OâMeadow School and Hawley School also received arrangements from members of the club.
The Garden Club of Newtown is a member of Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut and of National Council of State Garden Clubs.
An annual greens sale in December is the main fundraiser for the club, which contributes to the Newtown community in many ways such as maintaining the gardens at the Matthew Curtiss House, creating a butterfly garden at the senior center, and awarding college scholarships through the Newtown Scholarship Fund.
Monthly programs are the fourth Tuesday of each month, with socializing at noon, business meeting at 12:20 pm, and the program at 1 pm. Meetings are open to the public.
The clubâs current chairperson is Deb Osborne (426-6962);Â its membership co-chairman is JoAnn Scebold (270-1191).
