Elections Have Consequences XVI

To The Editor:

There is no doubt that Trump would love to be a king. A bejeweled crown and a royal throne would be just the right finishing touches to the gaudy gold décor that he has already installed in the Oval Office. The man is really stuck in some past gilded age.

After his first attempt at playing the President, Trump’s performance was ranked between 41-45 in various presidential rankings. He was impeached twice, once for inciting a riot to overthrow an election, stole government material and stashed it in his beach house, was found guilty of sexual assault and still owes E. Jean Carroll over $80 million, and was found guilty of 49 felony charges, and yet — 49.8% of all voters thought putting him back in the same job was a good idea. Now he thinks he can have it all — whatever he wants — whenever he wants. There is even talk of minting a coin with his image for the 250th anniversary celebrating the last time we dumped a king. How ironic would that be?

He is rapidly expanding his presidential powers by taking over agencies that were once considered to be independent. States’ rights no longer matter, and he sees the military as his personal police force to suppress all those who dare to resist him. Elected Republicans — all the King’s men — refuse to halt this march to autocracy.

On October 18th there will be nationwide rallies to protest what Trump is doing to our country. In Newtown, No Kings Day will be held at Dickinson Park starting at 12:30 pm. Instead of yelling at the TV, instead of feeling powerless, come out and join others who feel the same way you do. Check the web site for Rock This Democracy for further details of the event and let your voice be heard.

We will be peaceful, we will be respectful, but we will not submit quietly to this takeover of our democracy by a con man and his lemmings.
