Hit Utility Pole And Sign

Newtown Police report Abgussen Ferreira, 24, of Danbury, operating a 2001 BMW 530xi, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road at 6:50 am September 23. While attempting to negotiate a curve in the roadway at the intersection with Old Mill Road, Ferreira went off the roadway right, striking a utility pole and then an arrow traffic sign.

Ferreira was transported to Danbury Hospital for further evaluation. The vehicle was towed.

The incident is still under investigation.

Struck Street Sign

Newtown Police report Jose Lino Dias, 23, of Danbury, operating a 2020 Honda Civic, was traveling northbound on Hawleyville Road at 6:16 am September 26. Lino Dias ran off the roadway right and struck the Interstate 84 West exit 9 on ramp sign.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

Lino Dias was issued an infraction for failure to drive in the proper lane.

Hit Car While Leaving Driveway

Newtown Police report Sergio Salazar-Cobos, 51, of Waterbury, was exiting a private driveway on Hanover Road at 8:01 pm September 30. Richard King, 71, of Newtown, operating a 2016 Lexus GX, was traveling northbound on Hanover Road. Salazar-Cobos struck King’s vehicle.

A passenger reported minor injuries and was transported to Danbury Hospital. Neither vehicle was towed.

Salazar-Cobos was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way from a driveway.

Unsafe Backing

Newtown Police report Rebecca Goldman, 17, of Newtown, operating a 2021 Toyota Rav4, was traveling southbound in the left turn only lane of South Main Street near Country Club Road at 7:26 am October 1. BE Rodriguez-Hernandez, 27, of The Bronx, NY, operating a 2006 Ford Econoline, was traveling northbound on South Main Street. Goldman started a left hand turn into a driveway on South Main Street, and then stopped in the northbound lane, and then reversed. Goldman told police she saw an oncoming vehicle and attempted to back up to get out of the way. The rear end of her vehicle struck Rodriguez-Hernandez’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Goldman was issued an infraction for unsafe backing.

Arrested On Warrant

Newtown Police report that at approximately noon October 1, Adam Bowditch, 23, of Sandy Hook, turned himself in to Newtown Police Department on an outstanding warrant. He was charged with risk of injury to a child, disorderly conduct, and tampering with evidence.

Bowditch was given a court date of October 9 in Danbury Superior Court after posting a $2,500 bond.

Restricted Turn

Newtown Police report Robert Shettle, 58, of Glastonbury, operating a 2024 BMW X5, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road at 7:33 pm October 1. Jeffrey Schreier, 68, of Sandy Hook, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road. Shettle attempted to turn left into a driveway and struck Shreier’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Both vehicles were towed.

Shettle was issued an infraction for making a restricted turn.

Backed Into Vehicle

Newtown Police report William Brown, 73, of Naples, Fla., operating a 2018 Audi Q5, was attempting to back out of a parking space in a lot at 26 Hawleyville Road at 8:47 pm October 1. A 2014 BMW 535xi owned by Mary Swinson-Brown of Brookfield was parked in the same lot. Brown backed into Swinson-Brown’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Collided With Car While Parking

Newtown Police report Kevin Clement, 64, of Newtown, operating a 2013 Honda CR-V, was attempting to park along the side of an unnamed private roadway off Sugar Street at 3:54 pm October 3. A 2017 Jeep Wrangler owned by Marie MacInnies of Newtown was also parked along the side of the unnamed private roadway. While attempting to park in front of the other vehicle, Clement collided with it.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Passing On The Right

Newtown Police report Christopher Jewett, 17, of Brookfield, operating a 2023 Hyundai Kona, was traveling southbound on Main Street at 4:39 pm October 3. Melina Cash, 46, of Newtown, operating a 2017 Ford Expedition, was also traveling southbound and was stopped in traffic for vehicles waiting to turn left onto Church Hill Road. Jewett began passing vehicles on the right, and then Cash pulled out to begin passing vehicles on the right and was struck by Jewett.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Jewett was issued a written warning for passing on the right.

Evading Driver

Newtown Police report Anna Roussas, 70, of Newtown, operating a 2017 Toyota Corolla, was traveling straight after coming to a complete stop at a stop sign closest to 8 Queen Street, in the parking lot, at 4:18 pm October 6. While proceeding straight through and into the parking area, an unknown vehicle described as a white SUV drove through their stop sign without stopping, and struck Roussas’ vehicle. The white SUV then proceeded to drive out of the parking lot and head north on Queen Street.

No injuries were reported. Roussas’ vehicle was not towed.

This 2017 Toyota Camry came to rest in the grassy area between the parking lot of 77 Main Street and Martin Street after colliding with a full-size dump truck around 11:45 am Thursday, September 25. According to Newtown police, Kevin L. Shearer, 54, of Bridgeport, was operating the Camry southbound on Main Street. At the same time a 2025 Kenworth T880 work truck was traveling northbound on Main. The Camry was negotiating a curve left when it began to slide sideways and cross over the double yellow line into the northbound lane. The front left area of the Camry struck the front left area of the full-size dump truck. The sedan spun multiple times before coming to a stop at the intersection of Main Street and Martin Street. Both operators were reportedly wearing seatbelts. Both were checked for injuries; neither went to the hospital. Newtown Hook & Ladder and Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue firefighters, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps personnel, and a DEEP crew also responded to the scene, which closed Main Street for a few hours. Shearer was issued infractions for traveling too fast for conditions and failure to maintain a lane. —Bee Photo, Hicks
Firefighters put booms down to catch fluids leaking from this 2025 Kenworth T880 after the truck was struck by an out-of-control 2017 Toyota Camry. The driver of the full-size dump truck, William A. Lindsay of Meriden, was able to maneuver the truck around a business sign and building after the collision. The truck stopped in a grassy area between Art & Frame at 77 Main Street and the private residence at 79 Main Street.
