They did it again. Newtown High School’s boys golf team captured its third consecutive South-West Conference Championship, winning it all at Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course in Fairfield on October 14.

The Nighthawks had a score of 307 to overcome Pomperaug of Southbury and Weston, which tied for second with a score of 311. Newtown’s three juniors led the way as Will Lokey carded a 73 to finish second overall, Jack Wishneski 74 for third overall, and Nate Pickard 78. Freshman Aidan Andreotta shot 82, and Quinn Kull had an 85. Lokey and Wishneski made the All Conference Team, and Pickard and Kull qualified for the SWC All Colonial Team.

Newtown Coach Shawn Tierney was pleased with how his team progressed and got back to the pinnacle.

“We had a slow start to the year, losing our first two matches. We knew we had the talent to be number one,” Tierney said. “They finished the year by winning the Avon Invitational and SWCs — led all year by juniors Will and Jack.”

The SWC championships, much like the start of the season, took some settling for the Nighthawks.

“Early on we were in sixth place. The guys locked in and climbed the board to first,” Tierney said.

Up next are the State Championships; Newtown is ranked sixth as of October 14.
