For Students
Information and applications for the following scholarships have arrived in the Career Center at Newtown High School. Please note that these scholarships are not just for seniors; many are for underclassmen as well. For a complete list of scholarships available, check out the scholarship file in the Career Center. Chevrolet/Michelle Kwan REWARDS Scholarship Program â This scholarship has been established to annually recognize 10 outstanding female high school graduates from across the United States who are involved in athletics. Each scholarship provides a $5,000 reward payable over four years; $2,000 for the freshman year and $1,000 per year for up to three additional years. To be eligible, a female student must: 1) be currently completing her senior year; 2) possess a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale; 3) have demonstrated both academic and athletic excellence through school teams, intramural activities, organized athletic clubs or other community-based sports organizations; 4) have demonstrated leadership and community involvement/volunteerism; 5) be a citizen or legal resident of the United States.; 6) continued involvement in athletics while in college and 7) demonstrate financial need. Big Y Scholarships â Offers over 200 scholarships totaling more than $150,000 in awards for customers and employees. Big Y scholarships recognize academic merit and achievement, and are awarded to the most academically outstanding students in the Big Y market area. These are available to high school seniors, undergraduates, graduates, community college, and non-traditional students. There are also special awards specifically targeted for dependents of law enforcement officials and firefighters. Applications must be received by February 1, 2002, and are available in the Career Center and the Big Y.
The Burger King Scholars Foundation Award â Offers a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior. The student must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5, to a maximum 3.5, must work an average of 15 hours per week, participate in community services and/ or co-curricular activities, demonstrate financial need, and plan on enrolling in a two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school no later than the fall of 2002. Only one student will be nominated from Newtown High School. Applications may be obtained from the website at www.bkscholars.csfa.org or from the Career Center. Completed application must be returned to Mrs McEvoy in the Career Center no later than December 7, 2001.
