Newtown High School’s girls' volleyball team extended its winning streak to six with a 3-0 win over Bunnell of Stratford on October 9 and a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Pomperaug of Southbury on October 13 — both on home court.

Allie Nowacki and Cassie Pickering both logged eight kills, Rylan Kennedy had five kills, and Ava Lombardo tallied four kills. Sophia Galassi had two blocks and Pickering had a block. Lombardo set up the offense with 28 assists. Newtown needed only five digs as a team, led by Leah Botta’s three, to handle Bunnell in the minimum three sets.

In a back and forth match with Pomperaug, the set scores were 25-17, 20-25, 25-13, 19-25, and 15-11. Pickering had ten kills, four aces, four blocks, and a dig; Lombardo recorded seven kills, five aces, three blocks, and a dig to go along with 35 assists; Nowacki tallied seven kills and a pair of blocks; Leighton compiled six aces and six digs; Charlotte Miller had four kills, a block, and two digs; Jordan Kemp had four kills and a block; Addy Cordova had seven digs; Botta contributed four digs; and Kennedy had two kills, one block, and a dig.

The Nighthawks visited Weston on October 14 and finally lost, dropping a five-setter; Weston prevailed 3-2 (25-16, 15-25, 15-25, 25-10, 15-12). Lombardo registered seven of Newtown’s 16 aces and had two kills, two blocks, and 33 assists; Pickering had 12 kills, an ace, and a block; Nowacki ten kills, three aces, and a pair of blocks; and Cordova logged four aces and five digs.

Newtown carried a record of 8-3 in conference play into its final two matches and is looking for a top four placement and South-West Conference Tournament quarterfinal-round home match; the postseason begins Tuesday, October 21 (opponent and time to be determined).
