Families United in Newtown (FUN) hosted its annual soccer scrimmage and bake sale during the Newtown High School boys soccer team’s game against Xavier of Middletown on October 11.

FUN brought the community together for a halftime soccer scrimmage, a beloved tradition enthusiastically led by Craig Shaw, Gene Hickey, and several dedicated mentors. Members and volunteers of FUN got a chance to showcase their skills, laughter, and team spirit while enjoying the camaraderie that makes this event so special.

The NHS boys soccer team also put on an inspiring performance, playing their hearts out on the field in a 2-0 setback to a tough nonconference foe. Many of these student-athletes are active FUN volunteers, and their dedication on and off the field continues to make the community proud, according to FUN Founder Linda Jones.

Meanwhile, the bake sale, supported by generous contributions from high school parents, raised $235 to support FUN’s mission: providing meaningful social and recreational opportunities for children, teens, and adults with special needs in Newtown. Attendees enjoyed a variety of homemade treats, and the proceeds will directly benefit upcoming programs and activities for families in the community.

Despite the overcast weather, the event was a resounding success, highlighting the spirit of volunteerism, teamwork, and community that FUN fosters year after year, Jones said.
