With all of the understandable media focus on terrorism, I fear that a large number of local residents may overlook the upcoming municipal elections and the many fine candidates offering to serve the public in area towns. One particularly outstanding candidate is Owen Carney, the Republican candidate for Newtown First Selectman.
A 25-year veteran of the Newtown Police Department, Owen is no stranger to public service in Newtown. In his most recent capacity as deputy chief, Owen has applied for, and administered, state and federal grants. He has led the initiative to install computers in police cruisers and served on a committee to improve 911 service. Owen has also handled labor negotiations with the police union, gaining experience that will be invaluable in his new executive role.
Owen also boasts a commendable record of volunteer service. He is an active member of the Newtown Congregational Church, a past member of the Charter Revision Commission, and a regular reader for CRIS radio.
With only a short time remaining before next monthâs elections, I urge local residents to familiarize themselves with all of the competing candidates, and especially Owen Carney. He will make an outstanding first selectman.
