Whipkey scored on a 35-yard run to give Newtown an early 6-0 lead, but Immaculate answered right back â and quickly â to take a 7-6 lead. But quarterback Matt DeLuca hit Byrne with a 30-yard scoring pass to put Newtown back up on top, 13-7.
Early in the second, the Nighthawks drove the ball down to the Immaculate 15 and coughed it up on a fumble. But on defense, Whipkey picked off an Immaculate pass and brought it back for a touchdown and a 20-7 Newtown lead.
Later in the second quarter, with just 21 seconds left, Gantert took an Immaculate punt back 50 yards for a touchdown.
With the kick, the âHawks led 27-7.

Despite some nice tackles by Derek Pattison and a 20-yard pass completion from Kevin Wasicki to John Collins, Newtown was unable to get on top of Immaculate. The Mustangs scored on a pass play, but Dan Cascone blocked the extra point.
Pattison, Matt Selezan and John Morgan all had fumble recoveries. In the fourth quarter, Jeff Bell had an interception and Selezan and Keith Gotthardt made a good effort on offense, but the âHawks were still unable to break through.
