Children’s Programs:

Story Hour Regisration: Register for the next session of story hours October 22-31. Weekly story times are offered for 2 year olds: Monday-Thursday, 10:00-10:30 and 3-5 year olds: Tuesday-Thursday, 1:00-1:45, and Thursday, 11:00-11:45. Classes begin the week of November 5. Children must be 2 or 3 years old by November 5 and a resident of Newtown to be eligible for the program. No phone registrations will be accepted. For more information call the children’s department, 426-3851.

Author! Author!: The dynamic duo of Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen, author and illustrator of the popular Magic School Bus series, will be signing copies of the first book in their new series, “Miss Frizzle’s Adventures – Ancient Egypt,” Sunday, November 11, 2-3:30 pm in the C.H. Booth Library meeting room. Prior to the signing there will be a slide show and a question and answer session. Mark your calendars and don’t miss this opportunity to meet these wonderful children’s authors and get a personalized copy of one of their books for yourself or to give as a gift. Several titles will be available for purchase the day of the program.

         

Adult Programs

Add some mystery to your life… Spend the evening with mystery writers Marcia Talley and Kate Charles Monday, November 5, at 7:30 pm. These two authors will be on hand to speak on “Making Crime Pay” and to sign copies of their books, which will be available for purchase at the time of the signing. Marcia Talley is the author of Unbreathed Memories and the award-winning Sing It To HerBones. Her third Hannah Ives mystery, Occasion of Revenge, was published in August 2001. She is also the editor of Naked Came the Phoenix, a collaborative work, with each chapter written by some of today’s most talented mystery novelists. Contributors include Nevada Barr, J.D. Robb, Lisa Scottoline, Faye Kellerman, J.A. Jance, and Mary Jane Clark. Kate Charles, who was described by Oxford Times as “a most English writer,” is in fact an expatriate American. She has a special interest in and expertise in clerical mysteries, and presents frequent lectures on crime novels with church backgrounds. Her books include Evil Angels Among Them, A Drink of Deadly Wine, Unruly Passions and her latest, Cruel Habitations. You won’t want to miss meeting these two delightful authors.

Partners in Crime: A Mystery Book Discussion Series: This book discussion will be exploring the relationships of different mystery solving couples. On Tuesday, October 30, Evil Angels Among Them by Kate Charles will be discussed at 7:30 pm in the special collections room on the third floor. Some copies of the titles are available at the library. Sign up at the circulation desk or by calling 426-4533.

Genealogy Help: Every Monday from 2 to 4 pm Harlan Jessup provides free genealogy help in the Genealogy room. No need to register, but you may want to call ahead to confirm that Mr Jessup will be coming.

Free Blood Pressure Screening: Ashlar sponsors a free blood pressure screening in the genealogy room from 10 am to noon on the fourth Wednesday of every month. No need to register, just stop by.
