To The Editor:

As we head into the final stretch of this election season, it feels a bit like football — and for me, it’s 4th and Long. That’s when a team is facing a tough play, the odds aren’t easy, but they’re in it to win. That’s exactly where I am right now in my campaign for re-election to the Legislative Council. As an unaffiliated, petitioning candidate, my name will appear 5 rows down on the ballot this November. The odds might look tough, but like any good team facing 4th and Long, I’m going for it.

Since last summer, I’ve met hundreds of Newtown residents — first while collecting petition signatures to qualify for the ballot, and later throughout this fall’s campaign. I’ve gone door to door, stood in front of local stores greeting shoppers, and had countless conversations about what makes Newtown special and how we can keep it that way. Those conversations — and the encouragement from so many of you — have kept me motivated.

I’m incredibly grateful for everyone who has taken a yard sign, written a letter, or offered a kind word along the way. Running without the advantages of a party endorsement isn’t easy, but your support reminds me why I’m doing this — to represent people, not politics.

With just two weeks left, we’re in the fourth quarter of this contest, and I’m looking for that big play on 4th and Long to get across the goal line on November 4th. I’m asking for your vote — and your help spreading the word. When you’re filling out your ballot, just remember: It’s 4th and Long, and I’m down 5 rows.

Let’s finish strong, together.

Tom Long
