No Clarity From Walczak At Debate

To the Editor:

Anyone who watched last week’s selectmen debate hoping to learn more about Bruce Walczak and his plans for Newtown must have left sorely disappointed. His website and his few public statements have provided little or no specifics, so the debate was an opportunity — if belated — to offer some clarity. Unfortunately, what I heard was mostly more platitudes and few actionable ideas.

Apart from some vague appeals to being a better listener and possibly holding even more board and commission meetings than the hundreds that are conducted annually, there was no indication of how Bruce would actually lead. There was also little information on Bruce’s background. He claims decades of private sector experience, but when and where this experience occurred was not mentioned, nor has Bruce disclosed how long he’s been retired.

Jeff Capeci, who has spent nearly 20 years serving the town alongside his work as an engineer, was by contrast able to point to particular programs, initiatives and other concrete objectives that he has pursued and will continue to pursue if re-elected. In running a town, a flawless record is not possible, and there will always be room for constructive criticism, but Jeff has done a commendable job despite unexpected challenges. He’s earned my vote, and I hope you will consider giving him yours.
