To The Editor:

The difference between the two candidates for First Selectman couldn’t have been more apparent at last Thursday’s debate. Our current First Selectman, Jeff Capeci, clearly demonstrated the knowledge, steady leadership, and proven experience that come from years of service to our community.

In contrast, his challenger, Mr Walzak, offered little beyond vague ideas and generalities. At one point, he focused on fixing a broken clock on a school building — a symbolic gesture, perhaps, but hardly one of the pressing issues facing Newtown today. His lack of familiarity with the responsibilities of the office was concerning, and it became clear he’s not prepared for the demanding, around-the-clock role of First Selectman.

At a time when Newtown faces both complex challenges and exciting opportunities, we need thoughtful, experienced leadership that understands how to get things done. Let’s keep our town moving forward — re-elect Jeff Capeci for First Selectman.

One of the things that really stood out to me during the debate was how often the candidates said, “I agree with Jeff.” Even Candidate Lundquist and Candidate Walzak mentioned agreeing with Jeff on several issues. Sounds like Jeff has their vote too! Considering how poorly Mr. Walzak handled both the hearing and directly answering the questions, I think our path forward is pretty clear. Bruce set a clear path, he is up for listening, but it doesn’t sound like he is up for the responsibilities and rigors of office.
