Islamic Program Promotes Tolerance
DANBURY â As part of a broad program to promote respect and tolerance in the Danbury community in the wake of the tragedy of September 11, Danbury Children First is sponsoring a presentation entitled âWhat is Islam?â
Shazccda Khan, a member of The Islamic Society of Western Connecticut, will conduct the presentation, which will provide information about the basic beliefs of the Islamic faith and include discussions on Islamic governance, jihad (the struggle), the role of women in Islam, and Muslims respecting other religions.
The two-hour presentation will be offered two times: Monday, October 29, from 7 to 9 pm, at Rogers Park Middle School, and Saturday, November 3, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, at the Islamic Society of Western Connecticut, 388 Main Street. Please note, shoes must be removed at the door when visiting the Islamic Society.
âWhat is Islam?â is free of charge and requires no preregistration. Childcare will be available for both sessions. Spanish and Portuguese-speaking attendees may request interpreters by calling Ingrid Espinosa at Danbury Children First, 797-8088. The presentation is appropriate for all adults and children of middle school and high school age.
âDanbury-area residents pride themselves on embracing the strengths of diversity in our region. To work together we have to understand each othersâ religions and backgrounds,â said Linda Kosko, Danbury Children Firstâs collaborative director. âThis presentation educates Danbury-area residents about the 2,500 Muslims who live and work with us, and fosters tolerance and peace.â
The presentation is part of a series of respect and tolerance programs that will be provided throughout the fall of 2001 by Danbury Children First, with support from the United Way of Northern Fairfield County and the September 11 Fund. For more information about âWhat is Islam?â contact Ms Kosko at 797-8088.
