WSO To Open Three Concert Newtown Series With ‘Echoes Of España’
Waterbury Symphony Orchestra (WSO) invites audiences to let the passion of classic Spanish music whisk them away to a sun-soaked land of fiery rhythms and lush melodies when it launches a three concert Newtown Series on Sunday, November 2, at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street.
The concert, “Echoes of España,” will bring Spain’s rich musical soul to life through works of Rodrigo, Falla, Bizet, Sarasate, and more. From vibrant flair to tender romance, the program performance dances between drama, passion, and beauty.
“Echoes of España” features Rodrigo’s tuneful and expressive Concierto de Aranjuez for guitar and orchestra, Falla’s Ritual Fire Dance, and Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy for solo violin, among other works. The iconic works capture the warmth, drama, and romance of Spain’s musical landscape — an ideal escape as Connecticut prepares for winter.
WSO Music Director Leif Bjaland, brimming with excitement for the concert, said the concert “will feature the largest and most colorful orchestra ever to perform on the stage of Edmond Town Hall.
“We’re performing music of sun-drenched Spain, featuring glittering guitars, clattering castanets, and tremulous tambourines. Here in Connecticut, with winter on the way — join us for one last slice of Spanish sunshine and music that is muy caliente!”
The performance will feature a breadth of WSO’s professional orchestra musicians, with a 26-piece chamber orchestra, including strings, winds, brass, percussion, and keyboard, filling the stage. Joining WSO will be two acclaimed soloists: violinist Nathan Meltzer and guitarist Nathan Huvard.
Described by Gramophone as “supremely polished ... and exuding maturity ... stunning,” Nathan Meltzer is a Juilliard graduate and student of Li Lin and Itzhak Perlman. He is the 2023 Concert Artist Guild Competition winner, a major prize winner at the 2022 Sibelius and Singapore International Violin Competitions, recipient of the Salon de Virtuosi Career Grant, and the youngest ever to win the Windsor Festival Competition.
Regularly performing with The Metropolitan Opera, Nate Huvard is a guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, and music professor based in New York City. He is acclaimed for his versatility across genres, from early music and jazz to classical, new music, theater, and opera.
Huvard’s career includes extensive roles on Broadway (Camelot, 2023) and national tours (Chicago, 2022).
Tickets are $40 plus standard booking fees, $10 for students with ID through the box office.
Inspired by a conversation with Friends of Newtown Seniors (FONS), WSO Executive Director Doug Donato is offering a special discount to Newtown and Sandy Hook residents available ahead of the concert.
