What personal qualities do you have that you believe will benefit the Legislative Council? — As an attorney, I have had the opportunity to work with many different groups of people and individuals. Much of what I do revolves around analyzing problems, formulating a solution and then working with the parties involved to implement that solution. I have been successful in doing just that for my clients for 12 years. As a council member, I believe that I will be able to analyze the problems faced by the town, search and find a solution for those problems, and work with other council members to form a consensus and implement that solution.

What will be the council’s biggest challenge in the next two years? — To develop a fiscal plan for the town which protects Newtown property owners from increasing taxes while continuing to maintain and improve our school system and town facilities.

Do you favor economic development at Fairfield Hills, or should the campus be used solely for municipal purposes? — I believe that economic development of Fairfield Hills is part of a fiscally responsible approach to protecting Newtown property owners from an increasing tax burden. Fairfield Hills is large enough where the greater part of the property can be used for municipal purposes, such as offices and ball fields, while the remainder can be developed for tax revenue. There is no reason that municipal use should constitute an additional tax burden to the town. Proper economic development should be able to generate enough tax revenue to pay for the maintenance of the property in full.

The proposed changes to the charter may fail on November 6 because of confusion and concern over the need to implement the changes in just 30 days because of a clerical error. Would you be willing to reappoint a charter revision commission next year to bring these changes before the public again a year from now so that they may be considered solely on their merits? — I would support reappointing the Charter Revision Commission next year.
