South Main Crash

Motorist Kathleen Knapp, 41, of Danbury, who was driving a 1998 Toyota Camry southbound on South Main Street near Greenbriar Lane on October 20, stopped to make a left turn into a shopping center, and was struck from behind southbound motorist Margaret Stratford Kovner, 50, of Dedham, Mass, who was driving a 2000 Jeep Cherokee.

There were no injuries. Police issued Kovner a written warning for following too closely.

 

Moving Violations

Motorist Ajreden Islami, 31, of Bethel was observed by police driving on Church Hill Road about 10:20 pm October 27 without the taillights illuminated on his pickup truck.

Police stopped Islami and investigated, charging him with failure to have taillights on, operating a motor vehicle while under suspension, and failure to display a vehicle registration sticker.

After processing, police released Islami on a $200 bond for a November 13 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

DUI Charge

A motorist complained to police that a vehicle was weaving while traveling southbound on South Main Street October 28, so police investigated.

Police stopped motorist Kathleen Lynch Wilmot, 38, of New Milford and investigated, charging her with driving under the influence. Police held her on a $250 bond for an appearance the following day in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charge.

Vehicular Damage

A Sugar Lane resident reported to police that sometime between 5 pm October 26 and 7:38 am October 27, someone threw a rock at his motor vehicle parked near his home, causing an estimated $1,000 in damage to the windshield and left rear window. Police ask anyone with information about the vandalism to contact them at 426-5841.

Main Street Collision

Motorist Caroline Korth, 37, of 2 North Branch Road was driving a 1997 Mitsubishi sedan northbound on Main Street about 10:15 am October 26, and then stopped to turn left into the driveway of Booth Library, according to police.

Northbound motorist Susan Klang, 44, of 5 Blanche’s Walk, who was driving a 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback station wagon, then struck the Mitsubishi from behind. Newtown Hook and Ladder firefighters went to the scene.

There were no injuries. Police issued Klang a written warning for following too closely.

Prison Drugs

A Garner Correctional Institution correction officer seized a small amount of marijuana in a prison cell at the Nunnawauk Road high security prison on October 26, according to state police.

The presence of marijuana in the cell is under investigation.

Gravel Off Truck

Motorist Billie Jo Rizzo, 22, of New Fairfield was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS behind a 2000 Freightliner truck hauling gravel, which was driven by Steven Lee, no age given, of Sherman, at Exit 11 of westbound Interstate 84 about 2:20 pm October 24, state police said.

The gravel started to fall off the truck and struck the Chevrolet’s windshield and hood, causing damage. There were no injuries. State police said they are investigating the case.

Highway Sideswipe

State police report that a tractor-trailer truck traveling on eastbound Interstate 84 about 11 am October 23 sideswiped a 1996 Dodge driven by Linda J. O’Brien, 60, of Port Royal, Penn., and then drove away from the accident scene, evading responsibility. There were no injuries. The accident is under investigation, state police said.

South Main Accident

Police report a two-car accident on southbound South Main Street, near the driveway leading to 85 South Main Street about 1:10 pm October 26. The collision involved a 2002 Hyundai Accent driven by Mindy Cleary, 18, of Woodbury, and a 1998 Honda Civic coupe driven by Starr Rell, 23, of Woodbury.  There were no injuries.

Drug Charges

A 14-year-old student was arrested and charged with two drug counts on the morning of October 25 at Newtown High School, according to police. Police did not disclose the student’s name due to state laws that shield the identities of people under 16 who are charged with crimes.

Police charged the youth with possession of marijuana and also with possession of marijuana with the intent to sell it. The youth was found to possess of nine bags of marijuana and a large sum of cash.

School officials were advised of the situation after other students had said that the juvenile had asked if they wanted to buy marijuana, police said.

Police transported the juvenile to the police station for booking on the charges, after which the juvenile was released into the custody of a parent. The youth is scheduled to appear November 5 in Danbury Juvenile Court to answer the charges.

Flying Eggs

An Obtuse Road man reported to police that someone at about 9:45 pm October 30 threw several eggs at his home, one of which broke a pane of glass in a storm window on the front of the house. Police are investigating the egg vandalism.

Mercury Vs VW

Motorist Aleksandr Mitropolskiy, 38, of Woodbridge, was driving a 1993 Volkswagen Passat northbound on South Main Street near Mile Hill Road about 12:12 pm October 30, when the Volkswagen was struck from behind by northbound motorist Helen Saren, 80, of 7 Sunnyview Terrace, who was driving a 1993 Mercury Sable, police said.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Saren for following too closely. 

Burglary/Larceny

Police report that someone sometime between 8 am and 3:30 pm on October 29 entered a home on Swamp Road in Botsford and stole stereo equipment and jewelry. Police are investigating and ask anyone with information about the crime to contact the detective bureau at 270-4235.

Truck Into Bridge

Tractor-trailer trucker Pavel Vakoulich, 48, of Ontario, Canada, was driving a truck eastbound on Church Hill Road about 8:30 pm October 30 when the truck’s trailer became wedged under the low-clearance Housatonic Railroad rail overpass near Wire Road.

Vakoulich was not injured, but the truck’s trailer was totaled in the collision, police said.

Police issued the trucker an infraction ticket for failure to obey low-clearance signs and for driving a truck that was too long.

Bus Accident

Police report a minor school bus accident about 2:50 pm October 31 on Church Hill Road in front of St Rose School.

Police said a large school bus carrying about eight St Rose School students, which was driven by William E. Henckel, 54, of 25 Echo Valley Road, was turning left from the school driveway onto the road when it collided with an eastbound 1999 Subaru Legacy station wagon driven by Bernard S. Cayne, 76, of 8 Old Green Road.

There were no reported injuries.

The bus received light damage and the station wagon received moderate damage, police said.

Police issued Henckel an infraction ticket on a charge of failure to grant the right of way.
