On Sunday, November 2, Cub Scouts Pack 270 will host a community tabling event at Stop & Shop in partnership with Real Food CT. The efforts of the Scouts will benefit two Newtown food pantries and support Real Food CT’s mission of increasing access to healthy produce for area residents in need.

Scouts will be outside the supermarket within Sand Hill Plaza, 228 South Main Street, from 9 am until 2 pm.

As part of their community service initiative, the Scouts will educate shoppers about the importance of healthy food access. They will additionally encourage donations of shelf-stable produce items such as onions, apples, and potatoes, along with a list of preferred canned goods based on requests from the pantry partner directors. All collected items will be distributed by Real Food CT to two Newtown food pantries.

The effort represents a meaningful collaboration between local youth and community organizations.

“It’s amazing to have community members step up to support our own food banks with this special kind of event,” said Sean Fitzpatrick, executive director of Real Food CT.

Real Food CT is a nonprofit organization focused on increasing access to healthy food. This year, the organization will distribute over 125,000 pounds of locally grown produce to 30 different food pantry partners across the region. The November 2 food drive with Pack 270 highlights the importance of supporting neighbors in need with healthy food to the best of one’s ability.

For the Scouts, the initiative is part of a broader educational experience. They are exploring topics such as the five food groups, how nonprofit organizations operate including their missions, funding, and volunteer needs, and the value of civic engagement and community service.

Fitzpatrick said Real Food CT is “thrilled to collaborate with Pack 270 on this project.

“These young leaders are helping us grow something truly special by supporting healthy food access for our neighbors,” he added.

Cub Scouts Pack 270 committee member Ashli Newman added, “As Cub Scouts, we believe in helping others and giving back to our community. By collecting donations for our local food pantries, the scouts are not just earning their adventure loops — they are making a real difference in the community. We invite everyone to join us in the spirit of service and kindness by contributing at our November 2 event.”
