Jazz Society Announces

2006-07 Season

DANBURY — The Wooster Jazz Society at Wooster School will begin its new jazz season with a concert on Friday, November 3. Concerts will take place in the school’s Reception Centre, 1 Miry Brook Road, and each will begin at 8 pm.

Tickets are $35 for adults ($30 for members), and free for students. For reservations call 830-3963.

Kicking off the 2006-07 season of “parlor jazz” concerts will be the intoxicating 13-piece Latin Jazz Big Band Mr Vivo. Wear your slinky clothes to attend this World Fusion bash, because it is rooted in the passion of Argentine tango and folk songs, South American grooves, and laced with jazz improvisation.

Fronted by Argentine bassist Pedro Giraudo (who has played with William Cepeda, Kenny Garret and others at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, The Blue Note in Japan, and the Kennedy Center), Mr Vivo features top musicians including notables Tony de Vivo on percussionist on cajon, Will Vinson and Tony Barba on saxes, and Jess Jurkovic on piano. Special guest Sofia Tosello brings her brilliant vocal stylings to the band.

Their recent album, Desconsuelo, has been called “one of the best jazz recordings of the year.” It showcases transcendent, evocative music, dense, colorful, passionate, powerful and swinging evocative of great jazz masters like Ellington and Mingus, yet with a distinct folkloric flavor unique to the genre.

Having a big band is a first for Wooster Jazz, and organizers expect the energy and expertise will be sure to make the audience happy they crammed into the cozy space for some out of this world music.

The season schedule will continue as follows: Saturday, January 20, George Coleman Jr Group with Don Braden on saxophone; Friday, February 23, The Steve Davis Trio; Saturday, April 14, The George King, Jr. Group; and Saturday, May 12, season finale with performers to be announced.
